This book evolved from a symposium on the history of nationality and citizenship in Australia and New Zealand convened by Kate Bagnall at the University of Wollongong in 2017 and supported by the Centre for Colonial and Settler Studies. Kate is very grateful to the scholars who presented their work at the Subjects and Aliens symposium, including those who were ultimately unable to prepare their research for publication in this volume. Kim Rubenstein presented the keynote lecture at the 2017 symposium.
