Better Than Welfare?

Kirrily Jordan would like to thank the many people who have assisted her on the APY Lands and NSW far south coast over the last six years, with special thanks to Wanatjura Lewis and Leah Brady for their support. She is also grateful to Heather Crawford from CAEPR for her help and guidance in preparing statistical data for Chapter 4.

Too many people to name individually have assisted Jon Altman with his research in the Maningrida region over many years since 1979. He would like to specifically thank Dan Gillespie and Ian Munro for checking the factual basis of recollections and providing commentary on Chapter 7; and Kirrily Jordan, Melinda Hinkson, Bree Blakeman and especially Thomas Michel for expert critical commentary on an earlier version.

Will Sanders would like to thank the councillors and staff of both Anmatjere Community Government Council and Central Desert Shire/Regional Council for their time and openness to his research interests during many visits since 2004.

Boyd Hunter would like to thank Heather Crawford for providing statistical assistance on the geographic concordances and Tablebuilder census data for the south coast study in Chapter 3.

All of the authors are grateful for the advice of the two anonymous reviewers of this manuscript and the expert assistance of the CAEPR Editorial Board (particularly Frances Morphy) and copyeditor Beth Battrick in helping to see the publication through. The assistance of ANU Press has been invaluable and The Australian National University has generously provided financial support for publication through its Publication Subsidy Fund.
