Plant Detectives Manual: a research-led approach for teaching plant science

Appendix G: Hazard sheet (risk assessment)

A risk assessment is required to be included in an experimental protocol to ensure that anyone who reads or performs the experiment understands the health risk and control measures required to work in a safe manner with the hazardous substances that may be necessary for the experiment.

The assessment involves considering the nature and severity of the potential health hazard and the route and level of exposure.

A risk assessment form must be filled in for each hazardous substance that is used in the experiment and attached to the experiment. The form requires minimal written information and covers the type of hazard, disposal, control measures and emergency first aid.

Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) sheets will be provided for all hazardous substances used in the Plant Detectives Practical.
